The KCGL was founded in 2015 as part of a seminar experience by René Schallegger to enable interdisciplinary exchange, casual community yet academic engagement with videogames at the University of Klagenfurt.
The KCGL has since then been an integral part of the Game Studies and Engineering Master’s programme, with lab sessions taking place weekly.
The ‘C’ in KCGL stands Critical and Coding. As our programme is interdisciplinary (Game Studies/Engineering), our lab is as well. That is why the lab operates under two outlets. The critical lab focuses on the analysis of videogames, their culture and their industry, while the coding lab (now also called Game Dev Nights) focuses on aspects of engineering, coding and development.
